Direct from Verona: Student Workshops with the Cast of & Juliet
Kicking off the 2026/2027 Broadway in Boise season included some larger-than-life workshops with the cast of & Juliet. On October 21 and 22, Boise State University students were invited to participate in free dance and vocal workshops with professional musical theatre performers touring with & Juliet, and the experiences were electric.
Dance Captain Kyra Smith and Swing Kenneth Onesimus Goubran led the dance workshop in the Danny Peterson Theatre in the Morrison Center and taught a section of the choreography to “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING!”, the final number of the show. Throughout the 90-minute class, they led an extensive warm-up, broke down the movements, and fostered a fun and supportive learning environment. They concluded the workshop with a Q&A session, allowing students to ask any questions they had about working on a national tour, acquiring an agent, Smith and Goubran’s professional journeys, and more.
Company member Cayla Primous, who plays Nell and Lady Capulet, taught the vocal workshop in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. She led four Boise State theatre students through mini vocal lessons framed around a song of their choosing while a small audience listened and absorbed the information. After the students performed their songs, Primous asked them to articulate what the songs meant to them. This helped them more fully understand how they can best act through their songs to convey the intended message. Primous then gave specific notes to help guide the students through the more difficult moments in the vocal performances. This workshop also ended with a Q&A session, during which Primous explained her positive relationship with her demanding touring schedule and told stories about her background in theater.
& Juliet may be over, but our next Broadway show, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, is coming to the Morrison Center December 2-6, and more opportunities for students to learn from theater professionals are in the works.
