In the Holiday Spirit: A Charlie Brown Christmas at the Morrison Center

By Mya Powell, Boise State Class of 2029

The fan-favorite play, A Charlie Brown Christmas, is back for the holiday season. After a successful run in 2023, the Boise State Department of Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing decided to revive the stage adaptation of the 1965 television special. The short but sweet play, which is held in the Danny Peterson Theatre inside the Morrison Center, follows an identical script to the original special. The cast sings live during the performance, and the detailed and artful props resemble the beloved and familiar scenes from the film. The actors even wear wheels on the bottoms of their shoes and zoom across the stage to mimic the ice-skating scenes. This authentic production serves as a nostalgic reminder of holiday traditions for theatre-goers of all ages.

Several cast and crew members involved in the show were also a part of it during its first run in 2023. Caleb McMurren, who starred as Charlie Brown two years ago, is now working on the other side of the stage as the sound programmer for the play. “It’s been really cool seeing how the show has changed since last time, especially since last time I was in the show,” McMurren said. They also expressed their gratitude for being able to work on the play in a different aspect this time around. “Overall, I’d say I haven’t felt terribly pressured for it,” they said, “it has more so just been a really great learning experience.” Not every current crew member was involved in the previous run of Charlie Brown, but they now have the opportunity to view it with a fresh perspective. Allison Hall, the soundboard operator for the show, is one such person. “I personally wasn’t here the first time we did it, so it’s really fun to see it all come together very quickly,” Hall said. “I like seeing all these different departments, like scenic, sound, actors, all come together to be like, ‘here we go, here’s the show’, to the audience.”

A Charlie Brown Christmas has sold out this year, which just shows the sheer amount of love that the community has poured into the production. If you didn’t get a chance to get tickets, now is the time to prepare for the Theatre Department’s next shows, The Life of Galileo on February 6th, 2026, and Grease on April 17-19, 2026.
